The Stockton Police Department is set to expand its presence in north Stockton following the unanimous approval by the city council of a two-acre land donation from Verone Plaza LLC, as Top Stories reported. The property, situated in the 7000 block of Shoreline Drive, will serve as a hub for various police operations, including crucial mounted patrol training and enhanced community engagement initiatives. This strategic expansion aims to improve accessibility for residents in the rapidly growing northern part of the city.
Captain Bradley Burrell of the Stockton Police Department highlighted the significance of the new property for local residents. He noted that individuals in North Stockton do not always have convenient transportation to reach police staff, anticipating that department personnel would regularly be present at this new location to bridge that gap. This initiative is expected to bring police services closer to the community, fostering a more direct connection.
Before the council’s unanimous vote on Tuesday, city representatives raised pertinent questions about the intended specific uses of the donated land. Councilmember Jason Lee inquired whether the department envisioned the property functioning as a police substation. In response, the Stockton Police Department clarified that they are currently in the conceptual phase of planning the property’s development and determining its official utilization, indicating that concrete plans are still under development.
During the public comment segment of the council meeting, a resident underscored the critical need for transparency concerning the land’s deployment. The resident expressed support for police facilities but urged that no aspects of the property’s use be concealed. They emphasized that the wording around such initiatives should be clear, perceiving the donated land’s potential function as akin to a substation.
Despite some questions and calls for clarity, the land donation received positive feedback from several fronts. Some councilmembers characterized the acquisition as a significant positive outcome for the city. Furthermore, the police department reported favorable reactions from residents residing in close proximity to the donated site. Captain Burrell shared that the president of the local Homeowners Association conveyed excitement about the opportunity and expressed a strong welcome for the police department into their neighborhood. This suggests a positive reception from at least some parts of the community directly impacted.
The two-acre property comes with specific deed restrictions, stipulating that its use is exclusively limited to police operations. This ensures that the land will serve its intended public safety purpose without deviation. While the Stockton Police Department has secured the property, officials stated that they are still actively working through the logistics. The exact timeline for when the property will become officially utilized has not yet been determined, as the department continues to flesh out the operational details and development plans. This move represents a significant step for the department in extending its reach and services to the north Stockton area.
