A 22-year-old Tracy man, Mason Edward Machado, died Friday evening following a multi-vehicle crash described by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as a suspected DUI incident. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 5 p.m. at the intersection of Kasson Road and Linne Road, a key junction in the Tracy area. Machado, who was operating a Honda sedan at the time of the incident, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel responding to the accident.
The complex chain of events began with a northbound Toyota. According to the California Highway Patrol's initial assessment of the crash, this Toyota was traveling north on Kasson Road, but dangerously veered into the southbound lane. The driver of the Toyota was reportedly attempting to overtake another northbound vehicle, identified as a Peterbilt truck, when it entered the opposing traffic lane.
Simultaneously, Mason Machado was driving his Honda sedan southbound on Kasson Road, proceeding in the correct lane of travel. As the northbound Toyota encroached into the southbound lane, heading directly toward Machado's vehicle, Machado took evasive action. To avert what appeared to be an imminent head-on collision, he steered his Honda sedan onto the shoulder of Kasson Road.
Despite Machado's attempt to avoid impact by moving onto the shoulder, a devastating collision ensued. His Honda sedan struck the Toyota head-on. The force of this significant frontal impact then caused Machado's Honda to be propelled further, colliding with a motorcycle that was also involved in the broader multi-vehicle incident. The initial head-on crash between the Honda and the Toyota, despite Machado's evasive actions, led directly to the fatal outcome for the young driver.
The Toyota, after its initial head-on collision with Machado’s Honda, continued its uncontrolled movement. It then crashed into the Peterbilt truck, which it had originally been attempting to pass before the sequence of events escalated. Following this secondary impact with the Peterbilt, the Toyota subsequently overturned, coming to rest on the roadside shoulder.
The driver of the Toyota, identified only as a 43-year-old man, sustained minor injuries in the series of collisions. He received immediate medical attention at the scene before being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Authorities later arrested the 43-year-old driver on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). The arrest occurred after he received treatment for his minor injuries at the hospital, connecting the incident to alleged impaired driving.
The California Highway Patrol has confirmed that a thorough investigation into the multi-vehicle accident is ongoing. Investigators are working to piece together all aspects of the crash, including the precise actions of each driver and any contributing factors, as they continue their work at the Kasson Road and Linne Road intersection. The findings of this ongoing investigation are expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances that led to the tragic death of Mason Edward Machado.
